Intentions
Have you ever noticed that most of the books for kids’ art projects are really awful. The interest level and skill level involved don’t match and they seem more interested in making a final project that photographs well than allowing the kids to explore different media, processes. Art should be enjoyment and wonder, not frustration. So, this blog is intended as a place where we can share ideas and suggestions. Here is a great article about the importance of process for preschoolers. I would disagree, however, that preschoolers don’t see their work as representational except by adult suggestion. The Sage is 2 and a half and while he doesn’t always draw with an intention of making an umbrella, car or balloon when he sees something that has some similarity, he acknowledges it as such. The King was also drawing cars at age 2.

i agree with you — it is completely false that preschoolers don’t see their work as representational without adult suggestion. i have folders filled with observational drawings, sketch plans, and books made by preschoolers that prove that notion wrong!
